ukactive Flame Conference re-ignites the Fitness Industry!

The ukactive Flame Conference, Golf Day and Flame Awards were an inspirational set of events in 2017. A great speaker line-up, some encouraging networking opportunities, and a fantastic round of golf helped to restore my faith in the industry.

Having felt disengaged with awards ceremonies over the last few years, it was good to be re-invigorated by the “spirit of flame”. We were pleased to see Crow Wood Leisure nominated in the Club of the Year award, even if they were pipped to the post by regular winners, and hosts of our Sales & Retention Convention, The Club Company. The Spark of Innovation went to our friends at 4Global’s Social Value Calculator, very well deserved!

The golf day at Shifnal Golf Club was really well organised, a great atmosphere and closely contested. The course and weather conditions were both forgiving! Onto the evening entertainment at RAF Cosford’s Museum, where we networked, drank and ate dinner among the aircraft – geek heaven for an old RAF cadet and Aeronautical Engineer!

Onto the main event – the Flame Conference. Another rousing introduction from ukactive CEO Steven Ward kicked off the day, talking about data, habits, learning and development, innovation and disruption. Next up was a second chance to hear from Jonathan MacDonald at a ukactive event in 2017, and he did not disappoint. “To make people more active, more often, you need to be more active, more often” was his key-note. Obvious, perhaps, but well worth stating several times to get it to sink in! Jonathan darted through highly motivational tips and inspirational tricks, with lists and analogies to back up the learning from bears and helicopters to speedboats and tankers (you will remember if you were there!) The big finish once again was to end on ROI – before taking action of not, always ask yourself what is the “Risk of Inaction”.

Prof. Luis Huete followed Jonathan with his 3Bs; Belonging, Believing, and Behaving. He talked about data being the oil of tomorrow (I ask how we used the oil to fuel activity), feedback being the breakfast of champions, and Clienting vs Marketing.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson’s Q&A with Jason Kenny was the highlight of the whole event for me. Two incredible sports people chatting about life and winning. One quote by Jason summed up his whole approach; “It’s not tactics, it’s just process… give yourself the best chance”.

Well done to ukactive for another superb event, congratulations again to all the winners and finalists, and we look forwards to the National Summit on 1st November.
